Dance as if no one is watching

庄子: 骨节若一,与物无际

大音希声,大象无形

Zhuang Zi says: when the body and mind are at ease, bones and joints become as one, merging seamlessly with all things.

Great music has no sound; great form has no shape.

Zhuangzi's quote suggests that a truly skilled or harmonious person moves naturally in the world without needing to control each action. When we become too conscious of something, whether it's an object or an aspect of ourselves, it stops fitting naturally and feels forced. This means true comfort comes when we’re not overly aware.

This concept goes beyond physical things. In life, there's a natural ease and harmony that comes from living without constant self-awareness—just like a child dancing freely or the musician melt in the music. There are two aspects to consider:

Internal Freedom

Enjoy something without constantly monitoring or judging yourself. We found a child dance so beautiful not because they're highly skilled, but because of the natural joy and flow they exude. We find their authenticity captivating—they laugh freely, cry openly, and express themselves without fear of judgment. This authenticity comes from their lack of concern about how others perceive them. They create, play, and express themselves in the moment. As adults, we often lose this freedom, becoming self-conscious and concerned with how we appear. Returning to this childlike state allowing us to experience life more fully and authentically.

In reality, people don't think about us as much as we think. Most are too focused on how others see them. Besides, what others think of you is never as important as what you think of yourself.

Mastering a skill until it becomes natural

when we truly master a skill, we no longer have to consciously control each action—it becomes second nature. For instance, if we’re highly skilled at spotting while dancing, we don’t need to think about it or control it consciously; it flows naturally. In life, we should allow ourselves to fully enjoy the experience, without constantly comparing or striving for perfection. Otherwise, we risk losing sight of the very reason we began the journey in the first place.
